September 26-28th, the 2014 Lake Murray SUP
Classic, presented by Half Moon Outfitters, returns to the shores of Lake Murray for a full weekend of SUP fun! In
its third year, this event features races for all skill levels--short and
long-distances for intermediate through elite paddlers, a first-timer's
challenge, kiddos' race and a race featuring our Special Olympics South Carolina Area 7 SUP team. The
Lake Murray SUP Classic is the tenth race in the Southern Stoke
Race Series, a summer series of races on rivers and lakes throughout
the Southeast. Race proceeds benefit the Special Olympics South Carolina.
The weekend begins Friday, Sept. 26 with a clinic on basic SUP skills with Roddy Medders of Stand and Paddle, Bluffton, SC. Roddy is an expert instructor and will offer participants on-the-water coaching on paddling technique. This clinic will be held at the Irmo side of the Lake Murray Dam at 5pm. We're also pleased to offer an exclusive opportunity with legendary paddler Rand Perkins, who will hold a Q&A session on race training and technique based on his own winning experiences. Rand's session will be held at the Lake Murray Visitors Center at 6:30pm.
While you're picking up your race packet or completing a
last-minute registration at the Lake Murray Country Visitors Center, learn
about the history that lies underneath lake waters, the development of one
of the largest earthen dams and all the reasons why this lake is called the
'Jewel of South Carolina.' Wind down the evening with an option for
dinner, drinks and a perfect view of the sun setting over the
lake.
Saturday is race day and we start early with a
race that features our own Special Olympics South Carolina SUP team. This race
is the culmination of the team's summer training program and will be an
inspiring start to the day. In addition to racing, look for opportunities to
visit our sponsor tents, and sell off your unused paddle gear at the SUP Swap
Meet, hosted by the Lake Murray SUP Club. Watch for more details. New this
year, our post-race party and awards ceremony will be held at British Bulldog,
approximately 3 miles off the lake. This will be a great opportunity to
celebrate the day as a paddle community, enjoy some good food, drink
and live music.
And just before you pack it up and head
home, join us for a relaxed Sunday morning paddle followed by brunch
at Liberty on the Lake.
It’s a
full weekend of family fun! Come join us!
A big thanks to our sponsors--
