Battle of the Bay 2016

The Battle of the Bay race will be held on August 6, 2016. Hosted by Tim Dwyer and his family, this 5 mile race on Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay is a true open-water event, with rough ocean conditions and significant boat traffic likely. Although primarily for surfskis, outrigger canoes are also welcome to participate.

As in the past, the race will be held in conjunction with a Sean Rice beginner/intermediate half-day clinic in the afternoon (and a more advanced clinic on Sunday).  See Sean's PaddleLife page for details and registration information.

There is a $15 registration fee for this race to cover support costs.  You must register prior to race day - there is no race day registration.  No formal awards will be given (although winners may be required to pose with silly props), but this race is part of both the point series. There will likewise be no food or drink provided, although we'll walk together into the town after the race for lunch.  Last year we were able to get exciting photos of most paddlers racing and we expect to do so again.

Here's a link to the course map. Paddlers will meet at the beach across the road from the Bay Voyage Inn in Jamestown, Rhode Island.  Please park on Buloid Avenue or on Bay View Drive (near the Inn).    Do not park in the Conanicut Yacht Club parking lot.

8:30 - Registration and check-in
9:30 - Captain's meeting
10:00 - Race start

After the race, we'll gather for lunch a short walk down the road in downtown Jamestown.

The course is approximately 5.3 miles long. We’ll start off the dock at Conanicut Yacht Club, head east across the bay around the gravel spit that extends from the north end of Rose Island, proceed around Goat Island in Newport Harbor, head back across the bay to Buoy G11 (the buoy nearest Clingstone – the House on the Rock), then return to finish at the Yacht Club dock. There will be boat traffic to deal with, especially around Goat Island. Naturally, the course may be adjusted if the conditions of the day require it.  Launch and recover your boats from the beach across from Bay Voyage Inn (not from the Yacht Club ramp).

We will meet for the race at the beach across from the Bay Voyage Inn (near the intersection of Bay View Drive and Conanicus Avenue).  Park along the right side of Buloid Avenue or along Bay View Drive near the Bay Voyage Inn.  Do not park in the Conanicut Yacht Club parking lot.

The post-race lunch (not provided) will be in downtown Jamestown - a 10 minute walk south from the race venue.

For those attending Sean Rice’s Saturday clinic, meet at Bay Voyage beach (at the intersection of Bay View Drive and Conanicus Avenue) for a 1:00 start.  This will also be the meeting place for Sunday’s 9:00 am clinic.
