Hey Racers,
Once again we are having to postpone this event. This time it is not the weather but our permit was pulled yesterday at 4pm. We can not even explain why since we were not given reasons ourself. It's pretty amazing how an organization can do so to a charity event. We are very embarrassed and sad to announce this as we and all of you were excited for it to finally happen. JM and myself have been running around trying to find another venue to still host this race. Although we have found another venue that will not require a permit they can not host it for this Sunday 8/7. We will get back to you later today or tomorrow with future dates as we will still be hosting this race to raise money for the Boomer Esiason Foundation. I can not express how sorry we are about this. We hope you will all be able to make it to the new date. As we did last time if you are not able to make the next date or are not wanting to attend we understand and will issue a refund but we hope that all of you can bare with us for a little longer so we can make this event happen. Again very sorry and stay tuned.
We're bringing it back! Rockaway to Long Beach will make for this Elite 7 mile race. The Elite race will start on Beach 32nd street in Rockaway Beach. The Recreational 2.5 mile race will be start & end at Masone Beach in Island Park (where the Elite race will also end.) SUP's, Kayaks, & Surfski's are all welcome. Come on out and help support a great foundation, enjoy the festivities, and a great time on the water!
All racers will receive a race t-shirt, food, and drink vouchers. For non participants food and drink vouchers can be purchased for an additional $20.
If you do not have a board there will be boards available for rent at an additional cost.
Some Important Information:
There will be no onsite race-day regisration. Pre-registration is required. This will eliminate delays and confusion on the morning of the race. This will be a WPA sanctioned points race. All WPA racing rules and regulations will apply.
A Word on Safety:
We are taking every precaution possible to assure the absolute safety of each and every paddler regardless of age and experience. PFD's and leashes will be required.
Weather - As you know, we can not control the weather. We will make a decision on the race Friday evening, based on forecast and predicted conditions. We will send out an email Friday night and also post on FB if there is a change to the schedule below. The event is rain or shine.
Water Conditions and Temperature -
Although conditions can be calm, racers must be prepared for open water conditions, especially those participating in the longer courses; as you progress further from shore you may encounter increasing wind, current and wave size.
Equipment Guidelines -
All racers must properly wear a US Coast Guard Approved Flotation Device on their body at all times during the race and follow Coast Guard regulations for their boat type. All competitors should know their capabilities and make an informed decision to paddle based on the conditions and their skill level. Make sure to wear weather appropriate clothing and bring enough hydration and food to complete the race. All paddlers using a paddleboard or a surfski must wear a leash; this is mandatory. All kayakers must be able to complete a wet exit, right and re-enter their kayak and drain the vessel. All kayaks should have securely fastened, adequate buoyancy to float the kayak horizontally if filled with water (sufficient to support a 25 pound weight in a boat full of water).
Safety Information - If any paddler is in distress, they should indicate so by waving their paddle above their heads. Paddlers who see a distressed paddler should assist in the rescue of this paddler as needed and help to gain the attention of the closest safety personnel. Paddlers in distress will receive immediate assistance from the nearest support vessel.
Any paddler who voluntarily withdraws from the race MUST notify the nearest safety boat and provide their race number. The paddler MUSTalso sign out at the race tent on the beach once they are on shore.
All racers that are withdrawn from the race will be listed as DNF in race results even if the racer continues to the finish line after receiving assistance. Racers MUST sign out at the race tent on the beach once they are on shore.
Rules / Starts and Etiquette
No paddler may interfere with another paddler. All racers must stay within the course, may round a buoy in the wrong direction in order to gain an advantage.
Stay far enough from shore to avoid any fishing lines in the water. When paddling between the bridge spans, stay clear of the pilings, the current can accelerate you toward them and causes varying unstable water around their base.
