SUP for Smiles

The Carolina Stand Up Paddleboard Club of UNC-Chapel Hill has partnered with Operation Smile UNC-Chapel Hill to host SUP for Smiles, a charity SUP race dedicated to raising funds for the greater Operation Smile organization. Proceeds from the race will help fund pro bono surgeries for underprivileged children with cleft lip and palate deformities around the world. With your help, we can change these children's lives one smile at a time and have fun in the process!

The race will take place on Saturday, April 8th at Lake Brandt in Greensboro, NC. Pizza and awards will take place following the completion of all races. A raffle will be held for fun prizes and awards will be given to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for both men and women for each race. Children under the age of 16 require a parent or guardian's signature to participate under Lake Brandt regulations.

6.5 Mile Open Race

Saturday, April 8th, 2017
Race begins at 12:00 pm

This is a 6.5-mile flat water race with a water start. Racers will launch from the Lake Brandt Marina and head left along the shore towards a small island. Racers will make a right-hand turn around the island and continue to follow the shore as the lake curves to the left. Racers will cross the lake and paddle until they reach the bridge where they will make a right-hand buoy turn and follow the same path back to the marina to finish the race. This distance is ideal for more experienced paddlers and can take up to 2 hours to complete. We don't recommend this distance for first time racers or paddlers.

3 Mile Open Race

Saturday, April 8th, 2017
Race begins at 12:15 pm

This is a 3-mile flat water race with a water start. Racers will launch from the Lake Brandt Marina and head left along the shore towards a small island. Racers will make a right-hand turn around the island and head back to the marina where they will make a right-hand buoy turn and go on to complete the course again. After their second island turn, racers will paddle hard back to the marina to finish the race. This distance is equivalent to the 5K of SUP races and is enjoyed by both beginners and experienced racers alike!

1.5 Mile Recreational Race

Saturday, April 8th, 2017
Race begins at 12:30 pm

This is a 1.5-mile flat water race with a water start. Racers will launch from the Lake Brandt Marina and follow the same course as the 3 mile racers. An important difference is that 1 mile racers will only complete the course one time and therefore will not make the right-hand buoy turn. After their island turn, racers will simply paddle hard back to the marina to finish the race. This distance is perfect for first-time paddlers and provides a great opportunity to jump on a board and have some fun!
