South Florida Surfcraft Challenge

The South Florida Surfcraft Challenge is open to Outrigger Canoe, Surfski, Stand-Up Paddleboard, Prone Paddleboard and Surfboat over 6 and 12 mile ocean courses.  The race courses are visible from Hollywood Beach and along the inside line, friends and family members may cheer on their racers.  Proceeds of the event go to the Hollywood Beach Safety Competition Team, a 501(c)(3).

All starts will be wet with paddlers/crew on their craft.  The finish will be dry where the racers will paddle to the beach, dismount and run/jog/walk/crawl with their paddle a short distance to the finish line.  Boat caddies will gently move craft to the beach to insure a clean finish area.

Safety of the paddlers is a prime concern.  Leashes and Vests are required for all single craft with the exception of lifeguard paddled Spec Surfskis.  Vests are required for OC-6 and Surfboat.

This Sunday Morning race follows the USLA Junior Regionals held on the same water the day before.  Several manufacturers will be on the beach both days offering demos and basic instruction.

Crews trailering their OC-6’s may store their canoes on the beach prior to race day in a designated area.

Competitors will start on the shoreline at Harry Berry Park in Hollywood. At the start they will then proceed to a buoy approximately 300 yards offshore (buoy #2) where they will turn left around the buoy and head north. After three miles they will find a buoy approximately 150 yards offshore (buoy #3). Competitors will then turn left around this buoy and head south. After three miles they will encounter a buoy approximately 150 yards from shore (buoy #1). Competitors participating in the 6 mile race will turn this buoy and head for shore and the finish line. Competitors participating in the 12 mile race will turn left at this buoy and head back out to the 300 yard buoy for their second lap.

A fourth buoy (buoy #4) will be placed approximately 150 yards offshore and 350 yards north of the finish. This buoy will be colored differently and will be only for the use of the OC6 class to angle gradually to the finish line at the shoreline.
