The Great South Bay ( GSB ) on Long Island is one of the most amazing natural playgrounds in America. It runs 30 miles WSW to ENE and with the prevailing SW winds, it is a natural setting for this EPIC elite challenge. This race will showcase the beauty of the GSB, and the love for SUP and paddling on the East Coast.
This inaugural race is limited to 20 participants, and is expected to be predominantly elite paddleboarders on 14' SUPs, but all paddlers are welcome and encouraged to join, including PRONE, OC, KAYAK, ETC. Participants are expected to be fully prepared for this grueling event. Every effort will be taken to make this race as safe as possible, but it naturally has inherent risks. Every participant is encouraged to carry a fully charged cell phone in a waterproof case and allow the race director to track you. We will have safety boats. There will be two physical safety gate checkpoints that the participants MUST pass through and be counted ( and to stop for refreshments, or to get out, if needed ). THERE WILL BE A SAFETY TIME CUT OFF FOR THE FIRST STOP ( @ 9 MILES ) OF 2 1/2 HOURS, AND THE SECOND ( @ 18 MILES ) OF 5 HOURS. ALL PARTICIPANTS AGREE TO EXIT THE WATER IF THEY DO NOT MAKE THE CUT OFF (NO BABIES). WE WILL BE LOOKING OUT FOR YOU, BUT YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN WELL BEING. STAY CLOSE ENOUGH TO SHORE THAT YOU CAN SWIM TO IT IF YOU LOSE YOUR BOARD. LIFE JACKETS A MUST.
This race was inspired by the greats - Molokai to Oahu & Chattajack. It was particularly envisioned and timed as a great " training spin " for those training for Chattajack. And it has all the ingredients of being a future great of it's own !
All money raised from this event will go to the SAVE THE GREAT SOUTH BAY Organization, to help their fight to Save this Spectacular Natural Resource and Playground for generations to come.
