The Bridges of Essex County 2023

November 5 @ Pope's Landing Marina, Danvers, MA

GENERAL INFO

This is a common adventure surfski race Sunday, November 5th, starting at 1:00 pm.

Race starts and ends at the Pope's Landing Marina on Liberty Street in Danvers MA.  Plenty of parking, but we expect the rest rooms will be closed this time of year.

Course is approximately 6 miles of flat water on the tidal rivers from Pope's Landing to just past the Beverly-Salem Bridges at the start of Beverly Harbor.  Because the race will be held at mid-tide, the course will remain in the boating channel.  See the Course tab for details and a map.

Event will be self-timed, with times reported to the race "officials" (Bill, Greg, others TBD), and reported later via forum email.

Captain's Meeting in the small grass park between the water and the parking lot at 12:30 pm.  Race starts at 1:00 pm.

Though intended to be a flatwater race, a strong wind can create messy conditions including whitecaps on the river, especially in the wide bay between the Kernwood and Beverly-Salem Bridges.  Choose your craft-du-jour accordingly.

Water will start getting cold.  Probably still wetsuit vs drysuit temperatures, but again, choose your paddling gear with safety in mind.

There are many private docks on the river's edge, some are too low to pass under at high tide (which will be around 5:00pm on race day).   For safety sake, DO NOT pass under any docks, stay outside all docks at all times.

There may still be some power boats on the river even late in the season.  They should be navigating at 5-6 mph, but regardless, stay aware, especially when passing through the main bridges on the course.

If the weather turns out to be totally inappropriate to hold the event (rain, cold, snow, wind, locusts, whatever), a cancellation email will go out no later than 8:00 am Nov 5th.
