The SUP Cup

The second annual Bastrop SUP Cup on August 15-16, 2014 is Texas' original SUP River Festival. The 2-day event – held in historically hip Bastrop, Texas – includes two races and an obstacle course for average paddlers, elite paddlers, weekend warriors, and beginners alike.  There will also be a youth race, skill demonstrations, and a chance to participate in some sun SUP games.  The SUP events highlight a festive weekend that celebrates the Colorado River and the community of Bastrop, "the fastest growing SUP destination in Texas."  Come to Bastrop for a weekend full of SUP events, great food & music, and entertainment for the whole family.

Elite Division:  Compete in all 3 events with the opportunity to be Texas' SUP Cup Champion

Recreation Division: Compete with paddlers of your age and skill level

Individual Races: Pick which specific events you want to conquer (Elite or Rec Division)

Paddle Battle: All in for Bastrop – local sponsors compete in a corporate challenge for bragging rights (this one gets a little crazy)

SATURDAY, AUGUST 16

The Original Texas Down River SUP Race – “El Camino Real de SUP” (10 AM – 12 PM)

This 6 mile down river race is the perfect combination of competition and recreation. Whereas a seasoned SUPer will conquer this stretch in quick fashion, a recreational SUPer or weekend warrior will enjoy a new challenge and achievement. You’ll never run another 5K. This race is named after the El Camino Real paddling trail (one of the most popular kayaking and SUP trails in Texas and one of the most talked about SUP destinations in the U.S.)  This 6 mile trail changes along the way from deep wide waters to shallow narrow passes. Big flat water and skinny little quick spots make this an ideal setting for a SUP race.  The Colorado River is a class 1 river so no worries about portaging rapids.

Distance: 6 miles

Start Line: Fisherman’s Park

Finish Line: The Colorado River Refuge

Shuttle Service provided before the race so your vehicle is there to haul your equipment back.  Drinks and snacks provided for racers at the finish.  Music and shade provided for race fans waiting at the finish.

Youth Race (Will take place between 10:00PM & 1:30PM)

Sign up for the Youth race will begin at 11:00AM at the BIG Hospitality tent which will be riverside below the Bastrop River Co.  Age range is 10 - 14.  Youth race is a free event.  Limited space available.  The course will be a short distance loop around buoys set out between the Hwy 71 bridge and the Chestnut St bridge.  Lifeguards and experienced paddlers will be on site to supervise and help out.  Limited number of PFDs will be available.  If your child has one they are comfortable with please bring it along.  Boards and paddles will be provided unless they have their own or a parents they could use.

THE PADDLE BATTLE Sponsors Race (Will take place between 12:00PM and 1:30 PM)

Local sponsors will compete in a short distance loop around buoys set out between Hwy 71 bridge and the Chestnut St bridge.  The winning sponsor will take home a trophy to display at their place of business until next years SUP CUP.  Come out so see some well known local business men and women who have jumped "on board" to help make this a great event.

The Skills Course (2 PM – 4 PM)

We’ve tested raw power and stamina.  Now let’s talk skill.  The obstacles are designed such that anyone who’s ever SUPed is suited to attempt and likely complete the course, while a skilled paddler will use his bag of paddling tricks to maneuver the course aggressively & impressively with speed & style (style points will be judged).  Set up on the river just below the Ole' Iron Bridge, SUPers will take on the obstacles two at a time on two identical courses, racing one another and the clock.  Throw in a couple hundred tubers, kayakers, and SUPers lining the river banks with water cannons cheering & jeering the competitors while drinking cold beer under the Texas sun, and we’ve got one wild afternoon.  The Saturday afternoon obstacle course brings a whole new concept to the idea of river SUP racing.

Competitors will enter & exit the water from Fisherman’s Park.

Spectators will have access to tubes, kayaks, and SUPs from which to watch the festivities.  The grassy shaded river bank offers another great vantage point for those who want to stay dry.

Awards and BIG FINALE! (5 PM – 12 AM)

Winners will be recognized at the River Side Stage at Neighbors Kitchen & Yard (formerly the Bastrop Brewhouse) for achievement and style over the course of the SUP Cup. The weekend will be capped off by a not to be missed concert with Mike and the Moonpies.  Concert will start at 7:00PM
