The South Bay Paddle

The South Bay Paddle is a fun and challenging 15-mile prone “hands only” paddleboard race. The race starts on the south side of the Iconic Hermosa Beach pier and heads south along the beautiful coastline of Hermosa and Redondo Beach.  At Torrance Beach and the PV Beach Club the race will head west along the majestic cliffs of Palos Verdes to the famous R10 buoy.  From the R10 buoy the course heads north mirroring the final stretch of the world famous Catalina Classic paddleboard Race course and finishing back at the Hermosa Beach Pier.  The South Bay Paddle is open to all prone paddlers.  Race Divisions include; Stock, 14ft, and Unlimited paddleboards and age groups for Groms(Under 18), Men’s, Legends(50+), and Open Women.

The South Bay Paddle is a great training paddle for Rock 2 Rock and is a qualifying race for the Catalina Classic Paddleboard Race.  This race is put on by paddlers, for paddlers and would not be possible without the support of the South Bay Boardriders club. 


The South Bay Paddle Schedule:

 

April 15th

Online Pre-registration opens up. All pre-registration will be done through Paddle Guru. Registration fee $75.00

 

Wednesday June 6th Midnight

Online registration closes. Beach entries will be accepted on the day of the race. Beach entry fee $100.00

 

Saturday June 9th-  -RACE DAY-

 

            5:30am 

Pre-Race Check in and Beach entries begin. 

Receive your race number and race T-shirt.

 

            6:45am

 Pre-Race meeting, safety discussion, and course description.

 

            7:00am

 Race Starts – Water start.  Beach finish

 

            12:00pm

 Race is officially over. 

 

            12:01pm

Post Race Awards & Divisions:  


Awards will be given to the top 3 paddlers in each division*.

Stock (12’) - Grom’s (18 and under), Men’s, Legend’s (50+), and Open Women’s


14’ - Grom’s (18 and under), Men’s, Legend’s (50+), and Open Women’s


Unlimited(over 14’) - Grom’s(18 and under),  Men’s,  Legend’s(50+),  Open Women’s

*There must be a minimum of 5 paddlers to justify a division.


Eligibility:

 

The South Bay Paddle to open to all men and women 18 years of age and older. Paddlers 17 years of age and under must have a signed parent/guardian release form.

 

Safety:

 

The South Bay Paddle is a 15-mile paddleboard race.  Each paddler is responsible for supplying themselves with enough fluids and nutrition to complete the 2.5-4.5 hour course in a safe manner.  

The South Bay Paddle will employee three safety boats to aid in the event that an athlete needs emergency assistance.

Directions:

From 405 north and south, exit Rosecrans Ave. Head west to Sepulveda/PCH.  Turn left (south) go 3 miles to Pier Ave. Turn right (west).

This takes you to the Hermosa Beach Pier.  There is plenty of parking in the parking lot ½ block south of Pier Ave. or the parking structure behind Starbucks 1 block north of Pier Ave.  There are public restrooms on the south side of the Hermosa Pier near the event site.
