ABOUT THE EVENT:

As leaders in our sport, we ask that you encourage cancer paddlers in your dragon boat circles to participate in “Unleash the Dragons.”  This festival brings together both breast cancer and all cancer paddlers for 2 full days of paddling on January 24-25, as well as preceding clinics for team leaders on January 22-23, 2025. We expect that attendees will not only learn and grow as paddlers but will build connections and friendships for all cancer dragon boat Thrivers. 

The sky's the limit for the number of cancer survivor paddlers that can register. Each paddler will register individually, so Team Captains do not need to fill their boat to attend. The unique design of this festival is to provide the opportunity to bring paddlers together regardless of team or type of cancer diagnosis.  Building lasting paddling relationships will no doubt be a memorable outcome of "Unleash the Dragons."

Just before the festival, on January 22-23, cancer survivor leaders like Presidents, Captains, Coaches, and Steers will also have an opportunity to focus on establishing stronger teams through a Leadership component of the event. The focus of this time will be on topics like festival planning, officiating, team management, and coaching, as well as individual skills including drumming and steering in boats both standard and small.  Because space is limited for the leadership portion of Unleash the Dragons, we are recommending that larger teams look at the paddlers attending and designate no more than 4-5 leaders whereas smaller /new teams consider sending 2-3 individuals.   As leaders yourselves you can help your paddling contacts determine who best can represent their team as leaders vs paddlers.
