Crystal Kai Sup Cup 2018

Head's up SUP friends!

The Crystal Kai SUP Cup, a WPA-sanctioned event, will take place Saturday, May 19, 2018, at The Crystal Coast. And you could win some CASH. There will be up to $20,000 in cash prizes! Novices and elites, alike, have a chance to win CASH at the Crystal Kai. The only requirement for cash payout is that the division has THREE registrants and finishers. Plus, the payout is three places deep! Thanks to this years sponsors: The Crystal Coast Tourism Development Authority, The Boat House on Front Street, Beaufort Paddle and Stand Up Outfitters.

The top male and female in the elite division (long course) are taking home $1,750 each!

Total purse for 2018 is $20,000!

Come to paddle and stay for some fun in the sun. After the rave, enjoy a free beer from Double Barley Brewing then head over to America's favorite small town for The Beaufort Music Festival. This free event in downtown Beaufort will take place May 18 - 19.

FREE Race Clinics! 
This year there will be free clinics offered prior to the race on Saturday, May 19. Check the Schedule Tab for details on each clinic. Clinic space is limited, so be sure to register early! 
Race Day:
The mandatory racer meeting is at 8:30 am at the gazebo at the Boathouse. The in-water start will take place promptly at 9:00 a.m. The long course will start at 9:00 am, and the short course will start at 9:05 am. The Grom race will take place at the conclusion of the long and short course.

Clinic: Basic Skills Clinic

Instructor: Kate Lewis, Stand Up Outfitters

When: Friday, May 18, 2018, 10 AM - 12 PM         

Where: Meet at Beaufort Paddle

Topics may include:

  • How to paddle straight
  • How to paddle in the wind
  • How to improve your paddle fitness
Kate Lewis is an ACA SUP Instructor and owner of Stand Up Outfitters in New Bern, NC. As an elite SUP racer, Kate has trained with pros, finished in the top 20 of the Graveyard at the Carolina Cup, and is a SIC Maui Ambassador.    

Clinic: Kids Clinic 

**This clinic will be beginner friendly and super fun. Plan to get wet and fall off a bunch!

Instructor: Jarrod Covington, Wrightsville SUP

Jarrod Covington is the two-time winner of the Crystal Kai SUP Cup (2015-2016). Jarrod is originally from Beaufort, NC and now lives in Wrightsville Beach where he is the founder, owner, and director of Wrightsville SUP. He is also a youth ambassador, SUP coach for the Wrightsville Beach Junior Elite Team, a founding member of the Wrightsville Beach Outrigger Canoe Club (WBOCC), and competes on the WBOCC A team 6-man outrigger. Jarrod is WPA and ACA certified, and a PaddleFit Pro Coach.

Clinic: Paddling Mechanics

Instructor: April Zilg

When: Friday, May 18, 2018, 1 PM - 3 PM

Where: Meet at Beaufort Paddle

Clinic Description:

The first hour will cover proper technique, and the biomechanics of paddling, and then a half hour to video and analyse each paddler's stroke.  Paddlers can expect to learn proper body position and which muscle groups to engage for each phase of the paddle stroke, which helps avoid injury and increase efficiency.

April Zilg lives in Wrightsville Beach, NC. She is currently ranked 11th in the world of all female SUP athletes. April finished in fourth place in the grueling 2017 Carolina Cup 13.2-mile Graveyard Race (one of the most challenging professional-division courses in the world), her best career finish in the race. April is a nationally-recognized SUP athlete and Hobie Team Rider, competing in both SUP Racing and SUP Surfing. April is a WPA-certified SUP instructor, an ACA-certified “L2 Essentials of SUP” instructor, and a SUP yoga instructor, and passes along her knowledge and love for SUPing through her teachings.

Instructor: Casi Rynkowski, Performance Training Outdoor Fitness and Anna Levesque, Mind Body Paddle

Casi Rynkowski is an AFAA certified personal trainer, and ACA level 2 SUP instructor. She is also a BIC Ambassador as well as the BIC Ambassador Team Coordinator, a Werner Team Paddler, a MTI Ambassador, Adventure Medical Kit Ambassador and a team member of Virus Action Sports Performance.

Anna Levesque is the leading expert on kayak instruction for women and yoga wellness for paddling, including SUP Yoga. Named one of the most inspirational paddles alive by Canoe and Kayak Magazine, Anna's twenty-plus years of experience as an accomplished international competitor and instructor las landed her in mainstream publications such as TiME, SHAPE and SELF Magazine.

There will be a long course (7 miles) and a short course (4 miles), with an additional 200-meter course specifically for the kid's (grom) race.  All races will be held in Taylor's Creek in Beaufort, NC.

Parking and Board drop-off
Please pull into the second parking lot immediately after the Boathouse to unload your board in the morning (this is the second driveway on the right after the first large main parking lot with the boat ramp as you approach the Boathouse coming east down Lenoxville Road.  Do not unload in the parking lot with the boat ramp). After you have unloaded your board, you will be required to move your car to the third parking lot as you head east, across from Atlantic Veneer.
