The race course will start and end in front of Wades Beach on Shelter Island. The course will proceed in a counter-clockwise direction to the south-southeast, and encompass a complete circumnavigation of Shelter Island, a total distance estimated at 19 miles. Chase boats and timing will finish after 7 hours. All paddlers will be asked to paddle to a designated extraction point and be transported back to Wades Beach via our support vehicle if they haven't finished by that time.
Participants may elect to paddle half the course – about 10 miles – or team up in a two person relay, breaking the course up into two legs. The first relay leg will end at Menhaden Lane and the second leg ends at Wades Beach.
Weather conditions will be assessed on race day to determine whether an alternate course is needed.
Alternate 1: Partial Course, West Side: Should there be heavy east or northeast winds, we will modify the standard course to a west side partial circumnavigation. The course will run Wades Beach clockwise to Hiberry Lane and back, finishing at Wades Beach.
Alternate 2: Partial Course, East Side: Should there be heavy west or southwest winds, we will modify the standard course to a west side partial circumnavigation. The course will run from the Wades Beach clockwise to the east, and finish at Menhaden Lane on the east side of Shelter Island.
Alternate 3: Is a short course in front of Wades Beach. A triangle one mile sprint, doing multi heats.
Note: All three alternate courses will be adjusted depending on weather conditions.
Tides and Sunset
The following tide information comes from noreast.com. There is a normal slack tide for about 30 minutes before the incoming tide ramps. We expect to be past the South Ferry before the tides are a problem for intermediate SUP paddlers. The next area is the 1/4 mile by fishing nets at Mashomack Preserve and rounding the Point. For kayakers, surf ski and outriggers these tides are not as much a concern.
