What is The Crossing?

There is an 87 mile open water stretch between Rochester, New York and Toronto, Ontario. Mike Shoreman has committed to crossing this stretch of Lake Ontario on a paddle board on the 22nd and 23rd of August, 2021. It is estimated to take Mike 30 hours over a period of two days of paddle boarding with the support of two support teams, the Toronto Police Marine Unit, and Gudrun Hardes - a paddle boarding expert who will be with Mike on the water.

A challenging feat for most, this will be the first time that the crossing of Lake Ontario will be done from Rochester to Toronto and by a person with a physical disability.

Mike has a neurological condition that causes dizziness, vertigo and balance problems, and hopes that his attempt to cross Lake Ontario on a paddleboard will help to dispel myths about people with different abilities. Mike wants to inspire those who have faced mental health struggles and people with different abilities to dream big, set big goals and work to achieve them.
